Birch Class

Welcome to Birch Class. Our class consists of year one children and our teacher is Mrs Attwell. Mrs Powell also works in our classroom. This year we have lots of exciting topics to find out about and some exciting trips that will help to bring our topics to life.

Our first class topic of the year is called ‘On the Rocks’. During this topic we will be finding out about Grace Darling; as well as researching the history of the RNLI (including a visit). During the second half of the autumn term our topic will be ‘Marvelous Materials’ and the focus will be on science. We are going to explore various everyday materials and find out how they are used. We will carry out investigations on how everyday materials can be changed and will use the results within our Design and Technology projects.

In the first half of the spring term, we have a geography-focused topic that will involve looking closely at our local area. We will compare our Island with the Caribbean and look at weather changes. In the second half of the spring term our topic will focus on science. We are going to look at plants, animals and seasonal changes.

In the first half of the summer term, we will focus on inventions that have changed our world! Our class will focus on the past and present and recognise how things are always changing including us.

Summer is a busy time of the year! Our final topic is ‘We are British!’ and we will be learning all about the countries within the United Kingdom. We will have our very own tea party and a visit to Osborne House. We will also be learning about ourselves as we prepare for Sports Day, identifying and naming basic parts of the body and thinking about the five senses and how we use them.
