Welcome to Van Gogh Class. Our class is a mixed year 1/2 class and our teacher is Mrs Rackett. Mrs Powell also works in our classroom. This year we have lots of exciting topics to find out about and some exciting trips that will help to bring our topics to life.
Our class is named after the famous artist, Van Gogh. In our artwork, we will be finding out about Vincent Van Gogh and having a go at creating artwork in the style that he used.
Our first class topic of the year is called Victorians. During this topic we will be finding out about Queen Victoria as well as researching what life was like for children in Victorian times then comparing it to our lives today. We will also compare Victorian toys with our own. After half term, we will visit Osborne House where the children will be able to experience what Queen Victoria’s children’s lives were like.
During the second half of the autumn term our focus will be on science. We are going to explore various everyday materials and find out how they are used. We will carry out investigations on how everyday materials can be changed and will use the results within our Design and Technology projects.
In the first half of the spring term, we have a geography focused topic which will involve looking closely at our local area. We will use our fieldwork skills to investigate the features of our school and grounds. We will also investigate the human and physical
features of the surrounding environment. We will also visit Pizza Express.
In the second half of the spring term our topic will focus on history. We are going to look at the Romans, how they lived and the impact they had on life today. We will be able to go and visit the Roman Villa so that the children can begin to understand how life in Roman times compares to life today.
In the first half of the summer term, we will be heading across the globe! Our class will focus on the continent of South America. We will use globes and world maps to locate the world’s oceans and continents to better understand how the countries of South America compare to the United Kingdom. We will also be finding out about hot and cold places.
Summer is a busy time of the year! For our final topic we will be learning all about animals, including humans. We will learn to identify and name common animals as well as compare them to each other. We will also be learning about ourselves as we prepare for Sports Day, identifying and naming basic parts of the body and thinking about the five senses and how we use them.
